These eight community reporters are looking into affordable housing and a city-run guaranteed-income pilot program.
We’re excited to welcome our latest group of Civic Reporting Fellows into City Bureau’s community.
Our reporting fellowship is a journalism school for the people. It’s a space where Chicagoans from across the city can develop skills, share resources and create impactful reporting that shifts power in our city. The summer cohort will be led by Alejandra Cancino, our deputy editor; Jerrel Floyd, our engagement reporter; and Sarah Conway, our senior reporter.
Fellows will continue the years-long tradition of diving into critical issues shaping Chicago. Divided in two reporting teams during the 11-week fellowship, these eight community reporters are looking into efforts to develop affordable housing with taxpayer dollars and are examining Chicago’s guaranteed income pilot program, as well as nonprofit-led efforts to provide cash directly to individuals who struggle to access the social safety net. Here’s a look into their reporting projects:
Affordable Housing in Bronzeville
This team will tackle affordable housing and will zoom in on 43 Green, a 99-unit mixed-income project in Bronzeville. More than half of the units in the development, which is near the CTA Green Line, will be rented at affordable rates. What does this project mean for Bronzeville residents and the city as a whole?
Guaranteed Income in Chicago
Chicago is launching one of the nation’s largest guaranteed-income programs to fight poverty. Fellows will explain what the program is and the history of the fight for guaranteed income in Chicago. They will also dig into who applied for the program and examine guaranteed basic income programs for returning citizens and undocumented families in Chicago.
We’d love any tips or suggestions for our summer reporting! Email us at info@citybureau.org, or leave a voicemail or text us at 312-361-0881.
