One year after the #StopGeneralIron hunger strike, join City Bureau and Southeast Side organizers to discuss what they learned and how they’re moving forward.

Chicago’s Black and brown communities have faced a long history of industrial pollution and inequitable development. When a polluter comes to the neighborhood, how do people get together, share information and build power? We’ll hear from Yesenia Chavez, Oscar Sanchez and Jade Mazon about building their coalition, strategizing to stop General Iron from moving its metal scrapping operation to their neighborhood and maintaining their month-long hunger strike. Plus, we’ll hear the latest updates from the #StopGeneralIron campaign after the city of Chicago issued its health impact report.

We’re inviting all attendees to bring/share their own resources around environment, development and coalition-building, and we’ll also lead a mapping activity to help build people power in your own community.

Panelists include:

• Yesenia Chavez is a member of the United Neighbors of the 10th Ward and a pre-med student who lives in South Chicago. She participated in the Stop General Iron hunger strike as the fourth person to join.

• Oscar Sanchez is an organizer from the Southeast Side, co-founder of Southeast Youth Alliance and director of Youth and Restorative Justice Programming at Alliance of the Southeast. He participated in the Stop General Iron hunger strike as one of the three initial hunger strikers.

• Jade Mazon is a co-founder of the Rebel Bells and a member of the Southeast Environmental Task Force and the Southeast Side Coalition to Ban Petcoke. As the oldest hunger striker, she participated for 25 days.

• Trinity Colón is a senior at George Washington High School working as the NRDC’s 2021 Midwest Youth Ambassador and an environmental justice activist based out of the Southeast Side of Chicago.

Un año después de la huelga de hambre #StopGeneralIron, únase a City Bureau y organizadores del lado sureste para hablar sobre lo que aprendieron y cómo están avanzando.

Las comunidades negras y de color de Chicago han enfrentado una larga historia de contaminación industrial y desarrollo desigual.
