Please read more about the Attribution / Non-Commercial / No-Derivatives Creative Commons license here.

In addition to stipulations listed at the link above, you must also:

  • Properly attribute all pieces of content to the original authors. Use “By [NAME], City Bureau”. This includes photographs, illustrations or other multimedia content.

  • At the top of the text of the story, include the following: “This story was originally published by City Bureau on [DATE HERE].”

  • You cannot edit the text of the article, except to reflect relative changes in time, location and editorial style. (For example, “yesterday” can be changed to “last week,” and “Bronzeville” to “a Chicago neighborhood.”)

  • If you share republished stories on social media, you must tag City Bureau official account in your posts.

For online articles

You must link the words “City Bureau” to the original URL of the story; include all the original links in the story; our newsletter sign up language and link. We ask that you add a short bit of code to the article page that will track number of pageviews—this code does not track any other information. Either of the below options will work.

If your CMS supports including JavaScript, you should include the following code.

<script type="text/javascript" src="https://hits.citybureau.org/hitpoints.js" async="true"></script>

If your CMS does not support including JavaScript with script tags, you can include the following code.

<img src="https://hits.citybureau.org/pixel.gif" width="1" height="1" alt="" />

For print articles

Include a line at the end of the story that reads, “This story was produced by City Bureau, a civic journalism lab based in Chicago. Learn more and get involved at www.citybureau.org.”

If you have any questions or are unsure if your republishing fits our guidelines, please reach out to Bettina Chang at bettina[at]citybureau[dot]org.
